Linux kan nu køre på Windows Azure

Microsoft har netop gjort det muligt for kunderne til deres cloud service Windows Azure, at køre adskillige Linux distributioner.

Der er tale om distributionerne Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP2, OpenSuse 12.01, CentOS 6.2 og Canonical Ubuntu 12.04, som nu kan vælges fra Windows Azure Image Gallery i forbindelse med opsætning af en virtuel maskine i Windows Azure. Ligeledes bliver det muligt at anvende egentilpassede Suse-distributioner lavet i Suse Studio.



I et email-interview med Infoworld udtaler Linux Foundation:



We do find it to be a watershed moment, especially considering the past, but it's not surprising, Cloud computing has mostly been a Linux and open-source affair. Microsoft is a smart company and will do what they need to do to be a player in cloud, and in this case it means doing something that was anathema in its past: agreeing that another operating system is needed in order to be technically relevant. I'm sure many Redmond inhabitants aren't too happy about this, but it's good for users.



Microsoft har lavet en aftale med firmaet OpenLogic om at yde support på CentOS - en gratis klon af den populære distribution RedHat Enterprise Linux.

RedHat har ikke kommenteret på, hvorfor deres distribution ikke er med, ligesom den f.eks. er det på Amazons cloud service EC2, der i øvrigt er en markant konkurrent til Microsofts Windows Azure.
